Doug Ashburn, DVM

Dr. Ashburn graduated from Texas A&M University with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1981.  After graduation he practiced at Glenwood Animal Hospital in Tyler, Texas.  In 1983 Dr. Ashburn moved to Lufkin and began practicing at East Texas Veterinary Clinic.  During this time he also became a managing partner in the Diboll Veterinary Clinic, Inc.  In 1988 he purchased 20 acres and a small house just outside the loop on Southwood Drive.  After an extensive remodel of the house he opened Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in August 1988.  Over the years Southwood Drive Animal Clinic has undergone a metamorphosis from a simple clinic with 2 exam rooms to the modern state of the art animal medical clinic you see today.    He lives in Lufkin with his wife Susan and their Miniature Schnauzer, Tess.  The Ashburns have a grown daughter, Elyse, who lives and works in Washington D.C. with her husband Paul.  Dr. Ashburn has always been active in local civic organizations.  He has served as Veterinary Science Leader for the Angelina County 4-H, member and president of the Lufkin Host Lions Club, board member of Hospice in the Pines, board member and president of the Lufkin Independent School District as well as many more.  He is also an active member in his church.  In his spare time Dr. Ashburn enjoys woodworking.  You can see his craftsmanship throughout the clinic. He also enjoys traveling with Susan.   

Shawn Penn, DVM

Dr. Penn, a Lufkin native, worked at Southwood Drive Animal Clinic before receiving his veterinary license and coming to the practice as full-time veterinarian in 1999. As early as his sophomore year of high school, Dr. Penn knew he wanted to practice veterinary medicine, and that goal took him down the road to College Station, home of Texas A&M University. Dr. Penn earned Bachelor of Science degrees from Texas A&M in Agricultural Economics and Veterinary Science in 1993 and 1997 respectively. He also chose to pursue his doctorate at his alma mater and graduated from veterinary school in 1999 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. After leaving Texas A&M, Dr. Penn worked a short time in Missouri and Illinois before he moved his family back to Lufkin and came to work at Southwood Drive Animal Clinic. In 2005, he became partners with Dr. Ashburn when he purchased part of the practice. When Dr. Penn isn't practicing veterinary medicine, he can be found with his wife Stephanie and two boys, Wade and Ben. He participates with his family in 4-H and sports activities and can be seen trudging through East Texas' backwoods, ponds and lakes where he hunts and fishes. His family enjoys two dogs, Belle, an English Springer Spaniel and Sadie, a Shih Tzu. They also have two cats, Ninja and Rascal. He is an active member of Timberland Drive Church of Christ and enjoys activities with friends and family.



Tammy Carlton, Clinic Manager

Tammy began her service with us in 2002 after working for 16 years at another local veterinary clinic.  She is a lifelong resident of Trinity County and graduated from Centerville High School.  She is currently working on her certification as a veterinary practice manager.  She and her husband are co-owners of TOY Ranch, a cow-calf operation.  In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband, three children and two grandchildren. She enjoys fishing, sports and showing livestock.



Kathleen Geye, RVT

Kathleen joined the staff of Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in 1990. She was born in California and was raised in Houston. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University, with a degree in Animal Science.  She became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 1991.  She enjoys gardening, reading, stained glass, jewelry making and has recently started quilting.  She shares her home with two dogs, a cat and several goldfish.

Ashley Koonce

Ashley  joined Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in 2014.  She is a graduate from Hudson ISD in 2008.  She is currently enrolled with Penn & Foster University and has received her Veterinary Assistant diploma and working toward her Veterinary Technician associate degree.  Her favorite hobby is spending time with her beautiful daughter Grace.  Her other past time includes Tucker her Cur Dog , fishing, camping and spending time on the lake.



 Tessa Atkinson       

Tessa joined our staff in August 2015.  She is a lifelong resident of Pollok/Central.  Tessa enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters. Three dogs, two cats and a pig are also a part of her family. In her off time she enjoys being outdoors.

Kerbie Holmes

Kerbie came to Southwood after working as a Vet Tech at another local clinic.  Originally from Arkansas, she moved to Lufkin in 1996 and graduated from Central High School in 2002.  She trained to become a national registered EMT and and is currently working towards becoming a nutritionist.  In her spare time she enjoys gardening, kayaking and spending time with her boyfriend Scott, a golden retriever named Kody, cats Kali and Lucy and her chickens.

Danielle Wright

Danielle joined Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in 2007.  She lives in the Central area with her husband and three children.  She enjoys spending time with her family and loves being outdoors.  She has three dogs that are also a part of her family.

Hunter Clifton

Hunter joined the staff of Southwood Drive Clinic for the first time in 2012 and returned to us in 2015.  Hunter was born in Nacogdoches, but moved to Wells when he was nine years old and still lives there.  He enjoys spending time with his family.  When not at work or school Hunter enjoys playing basketball, fishing and hunting.  He is studying Petroleum Technology at Panola College in Carthage.

Heath Jarret

Heath Jerrett is 19 years old and from Apple Springs. Heath started working for Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in 2014.   He loves anything that has to do with the great outdoors and animals. He is an avid hunter and fishermen when not doing that you will find him running or swimming. He is currently enrolled in Central Texas School of Taxidermy in Snyder, Texas. He hopes to continue his education and earn a bachelor degree in business or finance.  He feels blessed to work with amazing people and animals every day is a new and interesting journey.

 Tori Capps

Tori  is 20 years old and was raised in Grapeland.  She is married to Jonathan Capps.  Tori was raised around animals and loves anything to do with horses and outdoors. She plans to study to become a Veterinary Technician or Certified Veterinary  Assistant. She joined the staff of Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in August 2015.

Paula Staton

Paula joined our staff in August 2015 after moving to Lufkin from Northern Illinois.  She has been married for 30 years and has two sons. Paula has worked in the Veterinary field for fourteen years and animals are her passion. She currently has one dog and one cat.

Bradley Adams

Bradley started in 2015.  He attends Central High School  and plans to graduate in 2016.  He enjoys riding four wheelers, hog hunting and detailing my truck. He plans to pursue a career working in the oilfield.
