Doug Ashburn, DVM

Dr. Ashburn graduated from Texas A&M University with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1981.  After graduation he practiced at Glenwood Animal Hospital in Tyler, Texas.  In 1983 Dr. Ashburn moved to Lufkin and began practicing at East Texas Veterinary Clinic.  During this time he also became a managing partner in the Diboll Veterinary Clinic, Inc.  In 1988 he purchased 20 acres and a small house just outside the loop on Southwood Drive.  After an extensive remodel of the house he opened Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in August 1988.  Over the years Southwood Drive Animal Clinic has undergone a metamorphosis from a simple clinic with 2 exam rooms to the modern state of the art animal medical clinic you see today.  Dr. Ashburn is still the Senior Staff Veterinarian at Southwood Drive Animal Clinic.  He lives in Lufkin with his wife Susan and their Miniature Schnauzer, Tess.  The Ashburns have a grown daughter, Elyse, who lives and works in Washington D.C. with her husband Paul.  Dr. Ashburn has always been active in local civic organizations.  He has served as Veterinary Science Leader for the Angelina County 4-H, member and president of the Lufkin Host Lions Club, board member of Hospice in the Pines, board member and president of the Lufkin Independent School District as well as many more.  He is also an active member in his church.  In his spare time Dr. Ashburn enjoys woodworking.  You can see his craftsmanship throughout the clinic. He also enjoys traveling with Susan.   

Shawn Penn, DVM

Dr. Penn, a Lufkin native, worked at Southwood Drive Animal Clinic before receiving his veterinary license and coming to the practice as full-time veterinarian in 1999. As early as his sophomore year of high school, Dr. Penn knew he wanted to practice veterinary medicine, and that goal took him down the road toCollege Station, home ofTexasA&MUniversity. Dr. Penn earned Bachelor of Science degrees from Texas A&M in Agricultural Economics and Veterinary Science in 1993 and 1997 respectively. He also chose to pursue his doctorate at his alma mater and graduated from veterinary school in 1999 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. After leaving Texas A&M, Dr. Penn worked a short time inMissouri andIllinois before he moved his family back toLufkin and came to work at Southwood Drive Animal Clinic. In 2005, he became partners with Dr. Ashburn when he purchased part of the practice. When Dr. Penn isn't practicing veterinary medicine, he can be found with his wife Stephanie and two boys, Wade and Ben. He participates with his family in 4-H and sports activities and can be seen trudging throughEast Texas' backwoods, ponds and lakes where he hunts and fishes. His family enjoys two dogs, Belle, an English Springer Spaniel and Sadie, a Shih Tzu. They also have two cats, Ninja and Rascal. He is an active member of Timberland Drive Church of Christ and enjoys activities with friends and family.



Tammy Carlton, Clinic Manager

Tammy began her service with us in 2002 after working for 16 years at another local veterinary clinic.  She is a lifelong resident of Trinity County and graduated from Centerville High School.  She is currently working on her certification as a veterinary practice manager.  She and her husband are co-owners of TOY Ranch, a cow-calf operation.  In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children and fishing, sports and showing livestock.



Kathleen Geye, RVT

Kathleen joined the staff of Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in 1990. She was born in California and was raised in Houston. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University, with a degree in Animal Science.  She became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 1991.  She enjoys gardening, reading, stained glass, jewelry making and has recently started quilting.  She shares her home with two dogs, a cat and several goldfish.

Lynn Atwood

Lynn lives in Zavalla with her six year old son.  She began working for Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in 2010, after working at another local clinic for eight years.  Lynn enjoys horseback riding, hunting, fishing and riding 4-wheelers.




  Leann Sikes

Leann began her service with us in August 2012.  Leann was raised in Crockett and graduated from Kennard High School.  She lives in Diboll with her husband and 2 year old son.  In her free time she enjoys horseback riding at her father's home and riding 4 wheelers with her family.



Brandy Ponson          

Brandy joined Southwood Drive Animal Clinic in 2011 where she brought 12 years veterinary clinic experience. She has worked as a veterinary technician as well as having managerial experience. Brandy has a degree in Criminal Justice, but has always had a genuine love and passion for the health and well being of animals. After taking her first job in the veterinary field in 1998 she knew this was what she was meant to do. She lives in the Central area, along with her husband Michael and their two sons; Chase and Lane, and their three dogs. She spends her time away from work with her family usually doing something that involves sports as both of her sons play tournament basketball and baseball as well as school ball. This suits her just fine seeing as she is also a huge Atlanta Braves fan. She has a strong faith, believes in strong family values, and takes her responsibility to our pet owners very serious as she loves what she does. 


Kerbie Holmes

Kerbie came to Southwood after working as a Vet Tech at another local clinic.  Originally from Arkansas, she moved to Lufkin in 1996 and graduated from Central High School in 2002.  She trained to become a national registered EMT and after realizing her love for animals is currently working towards becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician.  In her spare time she enjoys gardening, kayaking and spending time with her boyfriend Scott, a golden retriever named Kody, cats Kali and Lucy and her chickens.
